The Church is excited to announce this month’s Knowledge Friday with journalist, author, and Sag Harbor resident Amanda M. Fairbanks speaking on her widely praised book The Lost Boys of Montauk. Described by New York Times bestselling author Ron Suskind as “an honest and touching book, and a hell of a story”, the story follows the commercial fishing boat Wind Blown as it leaves Montauk Harbor in March of 1984 for a routine offshore voyage.

For our first event in this series, we are honored to have artists Linda K. Alpern and Jeremy Dennis join us. Both artists have artwork included in our spring exhibition Empire of Water (featured above). Insight Sundays are the ultimate behind-the-scenes sneak peek and a wonderful opportunity to hear an artist focus on their individual work, see it through their eyes, and explore how it relates to their whole body of work, career, process, and interests.

In celebration of The Church’s spring exhibition Empire of Water, we are holding a round table with artists Scott Bluedorn, Cy Keener, and Steve Miller moderated by The Church’s Chief Curator Sara Cochran. Their discussion will address how they each create their work and where they find the balance between their creativity, practice, and desire to engage with important questions facing us today.

The Church is thrilled to announce artist and co-founder April Gornik, who will speak on her painting, Storm Suspended by Light, currently featured in our Empire of Water exhibition. The landscape shows the sun setting over the water as storm clouds roll in. The piece contradicts the stereotypical depiction of water as blue and instead highlights water as a reflective medium — mirroring the orange sky with an orange sea.
