We invite you to a special After Hours discussion of Space – Sight – Line with The Church’s chief curator, Sara Cochran. Sara will lead guests on a curatorial tour of the exhibition. She will then be joined by an esteemed group of collaborators essential to the exhibition: Sarah Heinemann, Artist and Senior Lead Draftsperson for the Sol LeWitt Studio who installed Wall Drawing 528B and James Miller, Artist and Jim Lambie Studio Assistant who installed Zobop (Wild Poppy) on The Church’s front stairs. Also joining Sara will be Kerry-Sharkey Miller and Ward Ackerman, respected and trusted installers who have worked on many The Church exhibitions. The group will explore the intricate process and intriguing ideas behind the installation of site-specific works. A Q&A will follow the tour and discussion.
From heavy ropes in waveform patterns suspended from the rafters of The Church to hand-painted walls and hand-laid vinyl staircase patterns, Space–Sight–Line required expert installers and creative teams to come to work in the building and bring these works to life. Learn how the exhibition was conceived, how the processes unfolded, and how an exhibition experience that explores our visual perception and makes our perspectives the key dynamic came to be.

Sara joined The Church in 2019 and has worked on over 10 exhibitions, including 4 major exhibitions she co-curated with Eric Fischl: Road Rage (2021), Empire of Water (2022),Threading the Needle (2022), and Strike Fast, Dance Lightly: Artists on Boxing (2023). Previously, she collaborated with artist Gregory Sale on his year-long project Future IDs on Alcatraz in the San Francisco Bay, was Director and Chief Curator at the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art, and Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Phoenix Art Museum. Earlier in her career, she held curatorial positions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. She earned her Ph.D. in the History of Art from the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. In 2015, she was participated in the Getty Leadership Institute at Claremont Graduate Universities.

Ward Ackerman owns and operates Red Knot LLC. He is recognized for his skillful installation of artworks for art institutions and private collectors on the East End and in New York. He has previously worked at Pace Gallery and with Keith Sonnier in his studio for 7 years.

Sarah is a New York City-based artist whose paintings, drawings, and site-specific installations celebrate the potential of modernist abstraction through process, play, and improvisation. She attended Smith College, and holds a BFA in painting from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and an MFA from Hunter College. Selected exhibitions include SARDINE Gallery, The Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Galeria Lume, SP-Arte, and ArtSampa OCA in Sao Paulo Brazil, Tiger Strikers Asteroid, LA The Whitney Houston Biennial, and The RE: Institute in Millerton NY. Sarah has worked for the studio of Sol LeWitt since 2000, realizing LeWitt wall drawings for museums, galleries, and private collections.

James is a Brooklyn-based painter whose practice draws heavily from the history of photographic and light-based media in both method and aesthetics—translating the rhetoric of an additive light process to a subtractive color medium. Miller captures traces of movement, light, and shadow with acrylic paint on canvas in a process parallel to cameraless photography. He received his BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design in 2009, his MFA from Yale School of Art in 2014, and was a Dedalus Foundation Fellow in 2015. His paintings have been shown throughout the U.S. and Europe—including the solo exhibition “Daemon” at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery in NY, and in group exhibitions “The Dust” at The Centre Pompidou and “Painting As Is” at The Fosdick-Nelson Gallery. He has worked with Jim Lambie since 2014.

Kerry Sharkey-Miller is an artist, photographer, and respected art installer. She has an extensive background in fine art and media production and owned and operated an art gallery, specialized in Native American artists, for 14 years. Kerry works with private collectors here and in New York as well as most of the art institutions on the East End.Item description
