ABOUT NILSON MATTA & CHICO PINHEIRO

Nilson Matta is one of the most respected Brazilian bassists in the world today. A founding member of the acclaimed Trio da Paz and a longtime collaborator with Yo-Yo Ma in the Grammy-winning Obrigado Brazilproject, Matta has redefined the role of the bass in Brazilian music by fusing traditional forms—like samba, baião, and choro—with a contemporary jazz sensibility. He is a consummate bandleader, educator, and composer, recognized for his lyrical phrasing, impeccable time feel, and deep connection to Brazilian rhythms.

Chico Pinheiro, a leading voice of Brazil’s new generation of jazz musicians, is a virtuosic guitarist, composer, and arranger whose music blends traditional Brazilian forms with jazz, pop, and fusion. His recordings have received international acclaim for their inventive harmonies, intricate arrangements, and emotive storytelling. With a touch that is both refined and bold, Pinheiro has collaborated with legends such as Dianne Reeves, Brad Mehldau, and Bob Mintzer.
