Bassist and composer Santi Debriano leads his electrifying ensemble Bembé Arktet, blending Afro-Caribbean rhythms, jazz improvisation, and spiritual textures. Known for his work with Archie Shepp, Randy Weston, and Freddie Hubbard, Debriano creates a vibrant, groove-filled journey through global jazz traditions. This performance promises deep musical interplay, propulsive rhythm, and bold originality.
The Arktet lineup, featuring some of today’s most adventurous improvisers, creates a sound world that is celebratory yet thoughtful, blending deep polyrhythms with modal exploration, folkloric melodies, and modern jazz vocabulary. Debriano’s compositions often draw from personal history, cultural memory, and his global travels, making every performance an act of storytelling as well as sonic innovation.
ABOUT SANTI DEBRIANO
Panamanian-born and Brooklyn-raised, Santi Debriano has long been a powerful voice in the evolution of Latin jazz and contemporary improvisation. With deep roots in Afro-Caribbean music and decades of experience performing with some of the most influential figures in jazz—including Archie Shepp, Cecil Taylor, Randy Weston, and Hank Jones—Debriano’s approach is both intellectually rigorous and rhythmically driven.
His ensemble, Bembé Arktet, is a boundary-crossing group that fuses traditional Afro-Caribbean and West African rhythmic concepts with contemporary jazz harmony and improvisational exploration. The word “Bembé” refers to an Afro-Cuban sacred gathering rich with drumming, dancing, and spiritual energy—a tradition that underscores the ensemble’s mission: to bring people together through rhythm and cultural resonance.
