The Reflection in Music series, led by artistic director Bruce Wolosoff, returns with its new season opener Time Remembered. Taking its title from Bill Evans’ enigmatic composition of the same name and placing it at the center of the evening, the concert explores the classical side of the musical world that shaped Evans and the music that he in turn inspired.
The program features Bach, Ravel, Debussy, Poulenc, and Dutilleux alongside Stravinsky, Ligeti, and a world premiere by Reflections’ artistic director Bruce Wolosoff. Performed by a stellar cast of musicians, the evening moves through memory, introspection, and music’s singular power to suspend time.
Wolosoff is joined by clarinetist Narek Arutyunian, violinist Christina Nam, cellist Michael Nicolas, and flutist Catherine Winters Boyack.

Clarinetist Narek Arutyunian is an artist who “reaches passionate depths with seemingly effortless technical prowess and beguiling sensitivity” (The Washington Post). As soloist with orchestra, his performances include the Copland Clarinet Concerto with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Alice Tully Hall, Artie Shaw’s Concerto for Clarinet with The Boston Pops, the Mozart Concerto with Oregon’s Newport Symphony, the Rockford Symphony in Illinois, and New York’s St. Thomas Orchestra, appearances with Prague Radio Symphony, the Kaliningrad Philharmonic, the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra and the Moscow State Symphony Orchestra, and a recording of the Weber Concertino for clarinet with the New Russia State Symphony Orchestra.
As First Prize Winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Narek was presented in debut recitals in New York at Merkin Concert Hall and in Washington, DC at the Kennedy Center. He has also performed at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall and the Morgan Library and Museum in New York, Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, and for the Washington Center for the Performing Arts, Lied Center of Kansas, Buffalo Chamber Music Society, Artist Series Concerts of Sarasota, Weis Center for the Performing Arts, and Arizona Friends of Chamber Music. In recent seasons he has performed as soloist with the Riverside Symphony at Carnegie’s Zankel Hall, the Bard Festival Orchestra at Fisher Center and in recital at the Harvard Club, Ithaca College in New York, and Evergreen Museum and Library in Baltimore.
This season, Narek will perform the Mozart Concerto as soloist with the Edmonton Symphony in Canada and in recital at Brownville Concert Series in Nebraska.
Narek has performed extensively in Australia, Asia, and in Europe, including at the Musée du Louvre in Paris and the Palazzo del Principe in Genoa. He has appeared at the Tanglewood Music Festival, Marlboro Music Festival, Juilliard’s ChamberFest, the New York Festival of Song, Bard Music Festival, Bridgehampton Music Festival, Krzyzowa Music Festival in Poland, and Germany’s Usedomer Musikfestival. He has also performed as both a clarinetist and Klezmer soloist for the Fiddler on the Roof in Yiddish off-Broadway production. In addition, Narek recently performed and spoke at the House of Representatives in Boston, Massachusetts for the 104th Anniversary Commemoration of the Armenian Genocide.
Born in Armenia, Narek’s family moved to Moscow when he was three. As a teenager, he won First Prizes in the International Young Musicians Competition in Prague and the Musical Youth of the Planet Competition in Moscow. He graduated from the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory as a student of Evgeny Petrov, received a bachelor’s degree from The Juilliard School, where he worked with Charles Neidich, and then earned a Master’s Degree with Mr.
Neidich at the Manhattan School of Music on a Leon Russianoff Memorial Scholarship.
CHRISTINA NAM
Violin

Praised for her “gleaming tone” (Gramophone) and “brilliance of the lyrical passages” (Classicamente), 23-year-old violinist, Christina Nam, has concertized around the world appearing in recitals and as a soloist with numerous orchestras. Nam received First Prize at the Ysaye International Music Competition 2026 in Korea, and is a recipient of the Salon de Virtuosi Career Grant 2026. She was awarded the Juilliard Peter Mennin Prize for outstanding achievement and leadership in music, as well as the Prix Reyl Award for violinists at the Verbier Festival Academy 2025, where she returns as an Academy artist the summer of 2026.
Recipient of many accolades both at international and national competitions, at age 14, Ms. Nam received Second Prize in the Cooper International Violin Competition, where she appeared with Maestro Jahja Ling and The Cleveland Orchestra at Severance Hall. Ms. Nam has worked with prominent conductors such as Louis Langrée, Robert Trevino, and Cristian Macelaru.
Nam recently toured performing Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto, with the Landesjugendorchester and Maestra Anna Handler in Germany, and then returned to Jakarta, Indonesia, performing as a soloist with the Jakarta Simfonia Orchestra under Maestra Rebecca Tong. Upon her return, she performed the Sibelius Violin Concerto as a soloist in the first half, and then joined the orchestra as Concertmaster for Shostakovich’s 10th Symphony.
Ms. Nam was invited to participate in the Junior category of the prestigious Menuhin Competition 2018 in Geneva, Switzerland. During the competition, she was chosen as soloist with the Orchestre du Conservatoire de Musique de Genève under the baton of Maestro Antoine Marguier. She was a featured recitalist for the Matinee Musicale Cincinnati as well as Salon de Virtuosi concert series with pianist, Rohan de Silva. Most recently, she received the Laureate Prize at the Young Concert Artists Competition 2025, in NYC.
As a devoted chamber musician, she has been a performing artist at several chamber festivals, including Four Seasons Spring Workshop, Chesapeake Music Festival, and Spiritus Festival. She is a member of the Amara Trio, recent Gold Medalists of the Chesapeake International Chamber Competition. They have performed at venues such as Alice Tully Hall, Paul Hall, Ebenezer Theater, and Prior-Jollek Hall in the Virgin Islands. They have participated in the Perlman Music Program, and were recitalists at Sundays at Three Chamber Music Series in Maryland, and at LeFrak Hall at Queen’s College, as part of the Chamber Music Live series.
Nam is currently a student of Catherine Cho and Donald Weilerstein at the Juilliard School
in the Artist Diploma Program, with a Bachelor’s and Master’s in music from Juilliard as well.
MICHAEL NICOLAS
Cello

A “long-admired figure on the New York scene” (New Yorker), cellist Michael Nicolas enjoys a diverse career as chamber musician, soloist, recording artist, improvisor, and teacher. His eclectic tastes and adventurous spirit have led him to forge a musical path of uncommon breadth, where his activities range from performing the masterpieces of the past in the world's most prestigious concert halls, to free improvisation in downtown experimental venues, to working with contemporary composers of all styles, pushing the boundaries of musical expression and meaning.
The ensembles Michael plays in illustrate his commitment to that musical diversity. He is the cellist of the Grammy-nominated string quartet Brooklyn Rider, an intrepid and genre-defying group which has drawn praise from classical, world music, and rock critics alike. As a member of the acclaimed International Contemporary Ensemble, he has worked with countless composers from around the world, premiering and recording dozens of new works. Another group, Third Sound, which Michael helped found, made its debut with an historic residency at the 2015 Havana Contemporary Music Festival, in Cuba. Earlier in his career, he played for almost a decade with the wildly popular Korean chamber group Ensemble Ditto, and also held a post as Associate Principal Cellist of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal.
As a soloist, Michael has performed recitals and concertos across the globe. His album Transitions, available on the Sono Luminus label, was named Q2 Music Album of the Week at WQXR upon release, and it has since garnered critical acclaim across North America. His discography comprises over 50 recordings as soloist, chamber musician, and sideman.
Of mixed French-Canadian and Taiwanese heritage, Michael was born in Canada, and currently resides in New York City, where he is on the cello faculty at The Mannes School of Music at The New School. He is a graduate of the Juilliard School.
CATHERINE WINTERS BOYACK
FLUTE

Hailed as a "formidable" flutist (Scherzo Spain), Catherine Winters Boyack enjoys a dynamic career as a versatile and in-demand musician and educator in New York City. Semifinalist in the prestigious Kobe International Flute Competition in 2021, Boyack was also the first prize winner of the National Flute Association's Young Artist Competition.
An avid chamber musician, Catherine is a co-founder of flute and percussion ensemble Coriolis Duo with percussionist Oliver Xu. She was a fellow of Carnegie Hall’s Ensemble Connect, performing chamber music in New York and Europe. In recent seasons, she has performed and recorded with American Modern Opera Company, Talea Ensemble, and Da Capo Chamber Players. Catherine is well-versed in new music, and has recently given premieres of music by composers Katherine Balch and Hannah Ishizaki. Her newest solo project, On Reclaiming, centers conversations around mental and emotional health in a large-scale, interdisciplinary set of commissions for solo flute and multimedia. As a concerto soloist, she has appeared with contemporary ensemble AXIOM, the Lake Forest Symphony, and the Utah Symphony. She has appeared as a recitalist at the National Flute Association Convention, the New York Flute Festival, and the Utah Flute Festival. In orchestral settings, Catherine has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, Opera San Antonio, AXIOM, and the Juilliard Orchestra.
Deeply devoted to music education, Catherine has led master classes at the Flute Center of New York, the Massachusetts Flute Festival, the Sacramento Flute Club, and the Utah Flute Association, and has served as a faculty member at Northern California Flute Camp. Through Ensemble Connect, she partnered with schools in New York City, bringing interactive performances to students of all ages, as well as teaching instrumental skills and facilitating student-led creative projects in music classrooms. Catherine is a sought-after flute clinician and maintains a private studio teaching students of all ages and levels.
Catherine is a Haynes Young Artist and plays on a 14K custom flute. She earned her MM in Flute Performance from the Juilliard School, and was awarded Juilliard's Benzaquen Career Advancement Grant upon graduation. BM, Brigham Young University. She is deeply indebted to her mentors Gretchen Pusch, Carol Wincenc, April Clayton, Elizabeth Weissman, and Ronald Staheli.
BRUCE WOLOSOFF

Bruce Wolosoff is "a formidable pianist and composer" (Gramophone) known internationally for his integration of classical, jazz, blues, and contemporary influences. He often composes in response to visual art and collaborates with leading artists across various disciplines. His music is regularly heard on classical radio stations worldwide.
Bruce's newest album Blue Mantra, released on Avie Records on October 11th, features music for the clarinet performed by Narek Arutyunian, including Matisse Fantasies, Blues for the New Millennium, and Blue Mantra, inspired by a painting by the composer’s wife Margaret Garrett. Matisse Fantasies and Blue Mantra received their world premiere performances at The Church.
Following the Avie Records release of Rising Sun Variations—a large-scale set of solo piano variations on House of the Rising Sun—All Music Guide wrote that "Wolosoff revives in spectacular fashion the Romantic tradition of the pianist-composer." He recently performed the work to great acclaim in Bilbao, Spain.
His 2023 solo piano album Memento continues to receive global airplay, while his 2022 Avie release Paradise Found: Cello Music of Bruce Wolosoff, with cellist Sara Sant'Ambrogio, reached #6 on the Billboard Classical Chart. Their earlier collaboration on his Concerto for Cello and Orchestra with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra also became a Billboard Top 10 album and was hailed by Fanfare as "an instant masterpiece."
Wolosoff's discography includes Songs Without Words (18 divertimenti for string quartet) on Naxos American Classics and a celebrated recording of Busoni's piano music on the Music & Arts label. Of the latter, Hannah Busoni wrote: "All those who love Busoni's work owe it to themselves to hear Bruce Wolosoff's compelling and beautiful interpretations. They are exemplary."
A frequent collaborator with the late choreographer Ann Reinking, Wolosoff composed The White City, which toured nationally to critical acclaim and was named "Best Dance of 2011" by the Chicago Sun-Times, and A Light in the Dark, an Emmy-nominated ballet inspired by Helen Keller and Ann Sullivan. At the time of Reinking's passing, the two were developing a ballet based on the life of John Keats.
Born in New York City in 1955, Wolosoff played in jam bands as a teenager while pursuing studies in classical piano. He earned degrees from Bard College and the New England Conservatory, studying with German Diez (a student of Claudio Arrau), as well as Evelyne Crochet, Richard Goode, Jorge Bolet, and jazz pianists Charlie Banacos and Jaki Byard. After an active performing career in his twenties, he stepped away from the concert stage at age 30 to focus on composition, returning to performance in 2011 with a recital of his own music, released as Many Worlds.
Since 2020, Wolosoff has served as artistic director of Reflections in Music, curating and performing in a series of programs that explore new ways of thinking about and engaging with the classical music experience.
