Free to Attend
On Friday, June 20th, from 1:00 - 3:00PM, individuals of all ages are invited to join artist Annemarie Waugh at The Church for a drop-in workshop crafting small terracotta sculptures, designated for inclusion in Bitterest Sweet, 2025, a site-specific installation at Sylvester Manor.
Dedicated to the enslaved Africans, indigenous Manhasset Indians, and Irish and English indentured servants who lived, worked, and died at Sylvester Manor, Bitterest Sweet depicts the shape of the Nkyinkyim ‘twisting’ symbol of the Adinkra, a representation of the Gyaman people of Ghana and the Côte d'Ivoire. The symbol is also representative of the twists and turns encountered on the journey of life.
After the session, the sculptures will be collected and transported to Sylvester Manor for inclusion in the installation, on view through September 14th, 2025.
All necessary tools and materials will be provided. Stop in anytime between 1:00 - 3:00pm.
