Land Acknowledgments are a traditional custom in many Native communities and nations and have served as a means of paying respect to the inhabitants of the land since time immemorial. These days, American communities are creating these public ceremonies to represent milestones on the journey of Relationship-building, Healing & Reconciliation. In this 3-hour workshop, Rev. Houston R. Cypress, a Two-Spirit, Indigiqueer Artist and Environmentalist from the Otter Clan of the Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida, will discuss how to go beyond land acknowledgment into action. Using movement, music, cinema, and text, Cypress will guide participants through a process of crafting an interdisciplinary expression of land acknowledgment for the lands on which they live.

In this 3-hour workshop, Wolitzer will guide participants through the early stages of the process including brainstorming, researching, developing characters, conflicts, outlining, and more. Learn the basics of intaglio printmaking in this four-session course led by expert printmaker Samuel Havens. Derived from the Italian intagliare (“to engrave” or “carve into”), intaglio is the generic term for recessed printing techniques in which the sunken lines or marks hold ink. Throughout four sessions, participants will be guided through the process of developing and printing an intaglio work, covering techniques that include drypoint, line-etch, aquatint, and electro-etching. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of press operation, determining how to set pressure, perform basic maintenance, and more. No prior knowledge of printmaking is required, however, this will be an intense course and participants should come prepared to learn, take notes, and be ready to follow specific instructions.

Join artist Toni Ross for an introductory class on the practice and technique of weaving with a small hand-held loom! During this three-hour session, participants will learn the basics of weaving, including how to make and warp a loom, tabby weaving, rya knots, interlocking and non-interlocking techniques, how to finish and remove a work, tuck in loose threads, and more! Throughout the day, Toni will discuss her preferred tools and materials while providing an exclusive look into the practice and technique behind her own projects. A variety of reference books will also be made available.

Break it down with Ivan ‘Heat Rock’ Cofield! Heat Rock first premiered his style at The Church during LayeRhythm’s Jam Session this past January and has returned to lead an introductory course on the fundamental movements, styles, and ideas behind Breaking. Each session will include detailed group instruction by Heat Rock, demonstrations of movements and style, and access to a lecture on the history and development of Breaking. The lecture portion of this workshop has been strategically placed between the two sessions so that both groups may attend.
