PLEASE NOTE: This is a two-session workshop, meeting on June 23rd & 24th, from 10:00am – 1:00pm

Internationally acclaimed artist Nanette Carter returns to The Church to lead a workshop that explores collagraphy, a printmaking technique at the core of her practice. Blending textural collage with traditional methods of printing, collagraphs are unique in that the ‘printing plate’ is created by layering various materials, textures, and pastes upon a flat surface. This two-day workshop will introduce participants to the process and procedure behind this contemporary approach to printmaking. Don’t miss your chance for this rare opportunity to explore this rich technique with a renowned master, whose has shown in museums the world over – including The Church’s 2023 exhibition Return to a Place by The Sea.

The two-day workshop is divided into two sessions. The first session will focus on the creation of a collagraph plate, and the second session will delve into the practice of inking and printing, allowing participants to create multiple impressions of their work.

The process begins by creating the collagraph plate - a collage or assemblage of two-dimensional surfaces with varied textures. Once formed, the assemblage is sealed with glue before being inked and printed either by hand or using a press, which yields an incredibly rich impression that showcases the forms and textures of the plate. Unlike a monotype, collagraphs can be re-inked and printed again and again, achieving multiple impressions which may vary in color and tone.

All necessary materials will be provided, though participants are encouraged to bring any textures, materials, or objects they would like to incorporate into their collagraph. The thickness of any brought objects/materials should not exceed 1/8”.

No prior printmaking experience is required to attend. The resulting prints and plates can be taken home following the workshop, along with the skills and understanding to continue working in this format.
