Join second-generation bookbinder Hadley Vogel for an introductory workshop on the art and technique of Drum Leaf binding! Invented by Timothy Ely, the Drum Leaf binding is a beautiful and simple structure that allows you to create a book with minimal equipment, while its unique design allows the pages to lie flat and be fully displayed without interruption of stitching.
Under the guidance of Vogel, participants will have the unique opportunity to learn from a true master as they compose, develop, and bind a simple hardcover book of their own. Participants will learn about the anatomy of a book and how to utilize the array of tools and materials associated with bookbinding. Vogel will also delve into techniques for working with book cloth and rice paper, sharing valuable insights for their use.
Please Note: Vogel has asked that participants bring 10-15 printed, 8.5” x 11”, single-sided sheets. These can be printed on glossy or matte paper, weighing 32lb/120gsm to 70lb/265gsm; just keep in mind that they will be folded in half to create the pages of the book.
Additional printed material will be provided for anyone unsure of the content they’d like to include. All other materials will be provided.

Hadley Vogel is a second-generation bookbinder who apprenticed from an early age under her father Paul Vogel of the Vogel Bindery in East Hampton, NY. In addition to her apprenticeship on Long Island, Hadley worked under master binder Martín Farfán Patiño, of Farfán Encuadernadores, Mexico City, MX, where she honed her skills, working with rare books and institutional collections. Hadley’s work is rooted in traditional structures, techniques, and materials, with a keen interest in experimentation and unusual materials.
