Stimulate your creative side and unlock spontaneity through text and movement! During this 4-hour workshop, instructors Emily Allan and Leah Hennessey will guide participants through a series of exercises and activities designed to explore the limits of physical expression, conveying reaction and emotion of written text through impulsive movement. Group discussions throughout the workshop will investigate what it truly means to unlock impulsive creativity, while also providing an opportunity for thought and reflection.

This workshop is open to those of all experience levels and abilities, especially performers, writers, artists, and anyone willing to explore physical expression!

Participants are strongly encouraged to memorize a short monologue or paragraph to work from.

  • Emily Allan and Leah Hennessey are playwrights, filmmakers and performers from New York City. They first worked together as co-creators of the cult web series Zhe Zhe. Their two woman show Slash, was called “fast and campy, and as clever as anything the New York stage has seen in some time (Vogue)” and deemed the “ultimate fanfiction play (Syfy).” Their last play, Star Odyssey, a commissioned piece by MoMA PS1, continued their exploration of homoerotic fanfiction and sci-fi eschatology. Their first film Byron & Shelley: Illuminati Detectives was commissioned by the The Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève for the 2021 Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement. Most recently they co-directed John Early: Now More Than Ever for HBO, which premiered at the TriBeCa Film Festival. This past summer they brought Slash to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it was called “quite possibly the end of civilization (★★★★)” by the Guardian.
