MOVEMENT WORKSHOP FOR TEENS: Martha Graham’s Heretic (1929) with OLIVER TOBIN

Learn from expert, Oliver Tobin— former Teens@Graham Director and curator of Martha Graham: Collaborationswho invites teens with a love for movement to explore Graham’s 1929 choreographed work Heretic. This participatory workshop is open to teenagers of all dance backgrounds and experience levels.  Participants will be introduced to the Martha Graham Technique and explore embodied storytelling through movement in the main gallery, surrounded by the iconic history and legacy presented in the exhibition.

Programmed in tandem with the exhibition, this workshop celebrates International Women’s Day, Sunday, March 8th. Join us in honoring Martha Graham, who devoted her life and body to the arts, sought power and liberation for women through dance, and, through collaboration, forged a legacy that transformed the landscape of contemporary dance.

Participants should dress comfortably and bring a water bottle. Socks or bare feet are recommended for movement. No other materials are needed.


ABOUT OLIVER TOBIN

Oliver Tobin is a former dancer with the Martha Graham Dance Company, where he performed in seminal works including Appalachian Spring, Clytemnestra, Diversion of Angels, El Penitente, Embattled Garden, and more. His theatrical credits include Off-Broadway productions of The Kentucky Cycle, The Lesser Magoo, Niranov, and Tallahassee.

 

As a Regisseur of the Graham repertory, Oliver has staged and directed a range of works, including Celebration, Episodes, Panorama, Maple Leaf Rag, and Diversion of Angels. In 2019, he reimagined and choreographed a new interpretation of Graham’s American Document (1938), which premiered in Los Angeles.

 

Oliver’s work in arts education and cultural diplomacy spans two decades. As Director of Teens@Graham, he designed and led comprehensive choreography and technique programs for New York City public arts schools, including Talented Unlimited High School, Frank Sinatra School of the Arts, Bronx Dance Academy, and the Urban Assembly School of the Arts. As a cultural ambassador with Battery Dance Company, he facilitated modern dance workshops throughout Germany and Africa. His teaching credits include faculty positions at Adelphi University, LaGuardia High School, Kaatsbaan Cultural Park, and the Martha Graham School.

In 2016, Oliver was appointed Director of Martha Graham Resources, where he led the preservation and stewardship of the Company’s extensive archive, spanning materials from 1894 to 2021—including costumes, production designs, photographs, ephemera, and personal items. He facilitated the relocation of the archive to the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center and implemented a digital archive to broaden access and support licensing for theaters, museums, academic institutions, and media. He has also curated and produced Graham-focused exhibitions for Google Arts & Culture, SFMOMA, and Museum Folkwang.

 

Oliver holds degrees and certifications from the American Musical & Dramatic Academy, the Sivananda Yoga Institute, and Empire State College. He is based in Sherman, Connecticut, where he is the founder and owner of HOMORGANIZED, a company dedicated to thoughtful, efficient, home and business organization.
